Constructionism
There are many tools that were discussed in the learning resources this week that can be utilized to accomodate the constructionism theory. Many of the Microsoft Office applications are great tools that allow students to create and build. I also use wikis as a tool to allow students to explore. By utilizing these tools students are engaged in learning and the process of creating.

Hi, Susie. What specific application have you used wikis in? I'm really seriously considering using this tool, but I will have to ask permission from my department head and possibly the central office, so I want to have some examples I can use when I ask. Any info you can share would be great.

ReplyDeleteI have not used wikis with my students but I did set up a blog page for my students to use. I did this when we learned about blogs in the class before. I was taking my students on a field trip to meet an artist in our area. I wanted the students to look up information on the artist and then post comments about what they saw or felt about the work. If I were grading myself for the idea I would probably give myself a B for good try but was not happy with the results from the students. I set up the page and they just posted comments, if I were going to do this again and I will, they will develop their own blog page and have the other students follow them similar to what we are doing now. Students need to learn how to interact on the internet with something that is not Myspace or Facebook.
Beth, we used wikispaces.com to set up a wiki. It is really easy to use plus it is for education classes.
ReplyDeleteKaren, I totally agree that many kids today do not interact with appropriate educational technology on their own. When I polled my students on their use of technology, almost all of the ones who reported using it often told me it was solely for social reasons. If kids knew about the information they could share and feel proud of, I think they would use those tools more often on their own.
